Our story opens in the prologue and it focuses on the life and untimely death of Naomi Allen Bradford. Naomi was married to Percy, Sr., who was the first African-American scenic director in America. After their separation, Naomi was faced with the heavy burden of having to raise three sons as a single parent. Thence forward, after her failed suicide attempt, she regains her will to live and the story shifts to her life and the lives of her sons. Despite the hardship and obstacles that they faced, Naomi eventually finds solace in letter writing. The majority of her letters were to her eldest son Percy, Jr. during the Korean War, and to her middle son Garrett during the Vietnam War. Naomi began her letters to Garrett with “Garrett dear” and she closed them with “Oceans of Love, Mom”—hence the book’s title.
