As the United States’ first president and its commander-in-chief during the Revolutionary War, George Washington is considered one of the most influential and important figures in American history. Born on February 22, 1732 in Virginia to a family from the gentry class, Washington enjoyed comfort and privilege in the Thirteen Colonies. After his father’s death when he was 11 years old, his older half-brother Lawrence assumed the role of father while Washington grew up on Ferry Farm in Stafford Country, Virginia. Today it is known as the George Washington Boyhood Home Site.

While his father’s death prevented him from attending England’s Appleby School where his older half-brothers had received their education, Lawrence’s influence and connections allowed Washington to enjoy a number of privileges in his early life. After gaining his surveyor’s license, he was given the position of official surveyor for Culpepper Country, which enabled him to buy land and receive a comfortable pay. This appointment was one of many ways in which Lawrence’s connections brought Washington to the attention of several important people.

Lawrence Washington served as the Virginia militia’s commander and after he succumbed to tuberculosis in 1752 the area he presided over was divided into four districts. One of those districts was assigned to Washington who effectively became a major after he was appointed adjunct general of the militia by Virginia’s lieutenant governor, Robert Dinwiddie.

Great Britain’s ambition to expand its territories, particularly into Ohio Country, would drastically alter the course of young George Washington’s life. The Ohio Company was a land speculation company founded to facilitate the expansion of Virginians into Ohio Country. While the Company held a technical claim to the land in the form of a treaty with the Indians and a grant from the British government, France had its sights set upon the area as well, leading to the French and Indian war. Washington’s father, Augustine, and his half-brother Lawrence, in partnership with Thomas Lee, had established the Ohio Company in 1748.

The French’s encroachment into the Ohio territory left Great Britain no choice but to steel itself for battle. In an effort to deescalate the situation, Dinwiddie dispatched Washington to the French with a letter asking them to leave the area. The French commander Washington that delivered the letter to, Jacques Legardeur de Saint-Pierre, refused the request. During his journey, Washington met with Tanacharison to guarantee he had the support of him and other Iroquois chiefs should the disagreement lead to a full-blown confrontation between the English and the French.
When Washington returned to Ohio Country in order to guard the construction of a fort, he and his men found that French forces had already seized control of the area and had begun building Fort Duquesne. With the invaluable support of Tanacharison, Washington and his forces ambushed the French forces led by Joseph Coulon de Jumonville. Tanacharison and his men had successfully located where de Jumonville’s contingent was located, giving Washington and his troops the upper hand. Although Washington had won this battle, his actions effectively prompted a war. The suspicious and unverified circumstances of de Jumonville’s death had international repercussions. Washington was accused of executing de Jumonville and the French fuelled their indignation with the claim that de Jumonville had been on a diplomatic mission. Washington was captured and subsequently released as a result. Despite no clear direction on how to engage with the French, Dinwiddie had encouraged Washington to use violence if the French showed signs of intrusion.
