He imagines that, if he succeeds in bringing this off, he will effectively make Diabolos work for the salvation of souls instead of their damnation! And for that, unbeknownst to him, he becomes a marked man. This is a theology-fiction fest in which the main character (Mjomba) "dies" and continues the dialogue on the other side of the gulf that separates the living from the dead! It is not until the moment he spies the Ruler of the Underworld, at the head of a column of demons, bearing down on him with the obvious intention of ferrying him to his assigned dungeon in the belly of hell, that it dawns on him for the very first time that he had actually been demon-possessed for the better part of his life, starting from around the time he quit the seminary to return to lay life. As Beelzebub gets him in a headlock, he tries in his desperation to attract the attention of Saint Peter who is standing guard at the gates of heaven and is within earshot, but to no avail.
